Two Jackson Public Schools scholars brought home home major wins from the Hinds County Spelling Bee.

Dorothy Fyke, a 6th grader at Bailey APAC Middle School, claimed first place, and Avery Dantzler, a 4th grader at Obama Magnet Elementary School, earned second place. Their strong performances highlighted a big day for JPS at this year’s countywide competition.

JPS proudly hosted the Hinds County Spelling Bee, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1925 and celebrates academic excellence, confidence, and a love of learning. Scholars in grades 2 through 8 from across the county took the stage, spelling under pressure and showing just how powerful preparation can be.

Rounding out the top three was Sloan Walker, a 5th grader from Eastside Elementary School in Clinton Public Schools, who placed third.

The winning word of the day was s-k-i-t-t-i-s-h, a fitting finish to a competition filled with focus, determination, and impressive vocabulary skills.

“These scholars showed incredible poise and confidence,” said Tiffany Cline, JPS Director of Libarary Services. “Events like this remind us how important it is to celebrate academic achievement just as much as athletic or artistic success.”

JPS was honored to host this year’s Bee and grateful for the opportunity to bring together scholars, educators, and families in support of literacy and lifelong learning.

The journey continues:

  • Regional Spelling Bee: February 17–19 (online)

  • Mississippi Spelling Bee: March 27–28 at Mississippi University for Women

  • Scripps National Spelling Bee: May 24–29 in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to every scholar who competed. Your hard work, focus, and confidence made this year’s Hinds County Spelling Bee one to remember.
