JPS Board Approves New Electronic Devices Policy for Scholars

JPS Board Approves New Electronic Devices Policy for Scholars

The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees has approved an updated policy governing scholar use of cell phones and other personal electronic devices. The move comes after months of review and a community meeting to gather input from parents, scholars, and staff.

Under the new policy, scholars are allowed to bring personal electronic devices to school; however, scholars should not have cell phones on their person, including but not limited to pockets, socks, jackets, or any other accessible location after the intake process. Bus usage is permitted as long as the device is silent and does not disrupt others and the use does not otherwise violate the JPS Code of Scholar Conduct (i.e., recording or taking pictures of others, bullying, viewing or sharing inappropriate content).

“We believe this is the right way to go to reach the kinds of achievement goals that we’ve set,” said Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene. “We don’t want to assume that because our scholars are living in this digital age that we can’t limit the use [of cell phones] during the school day.”

Some highlights of the updated policy include:

  • No use or visibility of devices in classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, or any school space during the school day.

  • Use on school buses is permitted as long as it is silent and does not disrupt others.

  • Scholars may not record, photograph, or post images of others without permission.

  • Use during testing, in locker rooms, or restrooms is strictly prohibited.

  • Three-strike consequence structure for policy violations, starting with a five-day confiscation and escalating up to 45 days.

  • Refusal to surrender a device when requested will result in additional disciplinary action.

  • Medical and academic exceptions may be made with prior written approval.

JPS will not be responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices. Scholars are encouraged not to bring expensive devices to school or leave them unattended.

For more information, families can review the full policy here and in the 2025 - 2026 JPS Code of Scholar Conduct and Student Handbook.
